Does eBay Remove Photo Metadata From Listings?
Last updated · 5 min read
Quick answer
eBay does not promise it. We found no eBay page that says it removes the GPS location or other metadata from listing photos. eBay's privacy notice says it collects camera metadata from images that you upload for sale. The only claim that eBay strips EXIF comes from a volunteer in a forum. Clean your photos before you upload them.
What eBay states
We read these eBay pages on 2026-11-08.
| eBay page | What it says about photo metadata |
|---|---|
| Picture policy | Nothing. It covers the size of photos (at least 500 pixels on the longest side) and bans borders, added text and watermarks. |
| User Privacy Notice | Lists "certain metadata recording the settings of your camera included in images of items you upload for sale" among the information that eBay collects. |
| Community forum (Ask a Mentor) | A volunteer Community Mentor answered a seller's question with: "eBay strips exif data (meta data) on photos." The seller had asked if metadata is included when location services are off. |
The forum answer is the only statement that we found that eBay removes EXIF data. It comes from a volunteer, not from eBay staff, and it gives no detail. eBay says that discussions in this board are limited to the original poster and Community Mentors.
We found no independent test of eBay listing photos. That is different from the tests that exist for social sites, such as Instagram and X. Without a test, we cannot say what the copy that buyers see contains.
What the privacy notice means
The notice says that eBay collects camera-settings metadata from the images that you upload. It does not say which fields this means. EXIF data holds camera settings, but also the GPS location, the date and time, and the phone or camera model. The notice names none of them by field. So the wording suggests that eBay receives your original upload and reads at least some of its metadata. It does not tell you what buyers can see.
The eBay page also shows a newer notice that takes effect on 2026-11-26. Read the current text if this matters to you.
Why this matters for a seller
- Your photos often show your home. A phone that saves GPS data writes the coordinates of the spot into the photo file.
- Other data travels with the location. The date, the time and the phone model help someone connect your photos to you.
- Local pickup and messages. If you send a photo to a buyer by email or in a message, the original file may go with it. The tests for social sites do not cover these paths.
- What the photo shows. A house number, a street sign or a window view can give away your address with no metadata at all.
These are general risks, not findings about eBay. Cleaning the file costs a minute and removes the question.
Clean the photos before you upload them
- Open WipePic in your browser.
- Add all the photos of the item. WipePic cleans up to 300 files in one batch, and each file can be up to 50 MB.
- Select a file to see what WipePic found. A small map shows a GPS location if there is one.
- Download the cleaned copies, or one ZIP file for several, and upload those to your listing.
WipePic removes the location, the phone or camera model and serial number, the date and time, the author, the editing history, thumbnails and other hidden data. It keeps the orientation and the color profile, and it does not change the pixels, so the photo keeps its quality. It runs in your browser and does not upload your photos. For the full steps, see how to remove the location from a photo and how to clean many photos at once. Our guide to removing metadata before you sell online also covers Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist.
What cleaning does not cover
- What the photo shows. Check the background before you upload.
- The text of your listing, your item location and your profile.
- What eBay already holds. If you clean first, the original that eBay receives has no location.

Questions
Does eBay strip EXIF data from listing photos?
eBay does not say so in any page that we read. A volunteer Community Mentor wrote in an eBay forum thread that eBay strips EXIF data. A volunteer is not eBay staff, and we found no independent test. Treat it as unconfirmed.
Does eBay collect the metadata of my photos?
Its User Privacy Notice lists "certain metadata recording the settings of your camera included in images of items you upload for sale" among the information that eBay collects. The notice does not say which fields this covers, and it does not mention the GPS location.
Can a buyer find out where I took the photos?
We cannot say. eBay publishes no statement about the copy that buyers see, and we found no test of it. If your phone saved the GPS location, the original file holds your coordinates. If you remove them before you upload, the question does not matter.
Do I need to remove metadata if I turned off location services?
Turning off location services stops new photos from getting a GPS location. It does not remove the location from photos that you took earlier. The file can also hold the phone model, the date and other data. Check a photo with the EXIF viewer if you are not sure.
