LOCATION CHECKER

Check If a Photo Has Location Data

Drop a photo on the box below to see if it has GPS location data. If the result says “Location”, click the photo to see the position and a dot on a map. Then remove it with one button. WipePic works in your browser, so your photo is not uploaded.

How to check if a photo has location data

  1. Drop your photo on the box, or choose it from your device. You can also pick a folder.
  2. WipePic looks at the photo and tells you what it found. If the photo has GPS data, “Location” is in the list.
  3. Click the photo in the list. It opens and shows the fields with their values, for example the latitude and longitude. A small map shows a dot at the position.
  4. To remove it, click Remove hidden data and download the cleaned photo. Nothing changes in your original file.

If “Location” is not in the list, WipePic found no GPS data in that photo.

What counts as location data

The location group holds the GPS position (latitude and longitude), the altitude and the direction the camera faced. It also holds place names, such as a city or a country, that some apps write into the file. A photo can have one, several or none of these.

Other ways to check a photo

You can also look on your own device. The steps differ a little between versions of each system, and they only show the data of one photo at a time.

  • iPhone: open the photo in Photos, then swipe up or tap the info button. A map or an address shows when the photo has a location (Apple Support).
  • Android: in Google Photos, open the photo and swipe up. The details panel shows a map if the photo has a location. Other gallery apps work in a similar way.
  • Windows: right-click the file, choose Properties, then open the Details tab. Look for Latitude and Longitude under GPS. If the GPS part is empty, the file has no position.
  • Mac: open the photo in Preview and choose Tools, then Show Location Info. If the menu item is grey, the photo has no location (Apple Support).

WipePic is faster for a batch, and it shows the other hidden data too. For a longer walk-through, read how to view EXIF data.

If you find a location

Anyone who gets the original file can read the position in it. That can be your home, your work or a school. Remove the location before you send the photo to a buyer, post it on a public site or share it in a group. WipePic removes it without changing a pixel. If you want to stop your phone from saving it in the first place, read how to stop your camera from saving location. To clean photos in bulk, use remove location from photo.

Your photo stays on your device

WipePic reads and cleans your photos in your browser. It does not upload them, and you do not need an account. The site uses Google Analytics for visit statistics, but your photos, their file names and their metadata are not sent anywhere.

Questions

How do I check if a photo has location data?

Drop the photo on the box above. WipePic reads it in your browser and lists what it found. If the list says "Location", the photo has GPS data. Click the photo in the list to see the position and a dot on a small map. If there is no "Location" in the list, the photo has no GPS data.

Does my photo have my location in it?

It can. Phone cameras often save the GPS position of the place where you took a photo, if the camera app has permission to use your location. Many messaging apps and social networks remove it when you share a photo, but a file that you send by email, cloud link or a cable keeps it. The quickest way to be sure is to drop the photo on WipePic and look.

Is my photo uploaded when I check it?

No. WipePic reads your photo inside your browser. The photo, its file name and its metadata are not sent to a server. There is no account to make.

The checker found no location. Is the photo safe to share?

It has no GPS position in the file. The photo can still show a place in its picture, such as a street sign or a house number, and WipePic cannot hide what is visible. The checker also lists other hidden data, such as the phone model and the date taken, so look at the whole list before you share.

Can I see the exact place where a photo was taken?

Yes, if the photo has GPS data. Click the photo row in the list. WipePic shows the latitude and longitude and marks the spot with a dot on a small world map. The map works offline, so it does not send the position to a map service. The map is a rough view, not a street map.

Which photo types can I check?

JPEG, PNG, WebP, HEIC and HEIF, AVIF, GIF, TIFF and DNG. You can drop up to 300 photos at once, and each photo can be up to 50 MB. You can also drop a folder.

How do I remove the location after I find it?

Click Remove hidden data, then download the cleaned photo. WipePic removes the location and the other hidden data, and it does not re-encode the photo, so the pixels stay the same. Your original file does not change. It checks the cleaned file again and saves it only if no removable metadata is left.
