Airbnb Listing Photo Metadata: A Host Guide
Last updated · 5 min read
Quick answer
Airbnb does not say in its help pages whether it removes EXIF data from listing photos. A phone photo of your rental can carry the exact GPS position, so remove the metadata before you upload. WipePic does this free, for up to 300 photos at once, in your browser.
What an Airbnb listing photo can reveal
A host takes dozens of photos of the same place: the living room, the bedroom, the garden and the front door. If the phone saves the location, each file can carry the exact GPS position of the property. That is more exact than a street name or an area on a map.
The files can also show when you took the photos, the phone or camera model and the apps that you used to edit them. If you rent out a room in the home where you live, the position is your home address. Photos that you took somewhere else, such as at your own house, can show that place too.
Hosts often send the same photos by email to co-hosts, cleaners and property managers. Files that you send this way usually keep their metadata.
What Airbnb says about metadata
We read the Airbnb Help Center articles about listing location verification (“How listing locations are verified” and “Ways to verify your home listing’s location”) on November 8, 2026. They do not say whether Airbnb removes EXIF data from the photos in a listing. We found no other official Airbnb statement about it.
The articles do show that location matters to Airbnb. For the photo method of location verification, Airbnb asks the host to take two new photos with the Airbnb app with precise location sharing on, and says it may use the location of the device to match it with the listing. That is a separate step. Those photos are not the listing photos that guests see.
So you cannot tell from Airbnb’s pages what happens to the metadata of your listing photos. A copy that guests download may have no metadata, but we found no source that proves it. The safe choice is to remove the metadata before you upload.
How to clean your Airbnb photos with WipePic
- Finish your edits. Make a copy of the folder as a private backup.
- Open WipePic.
- Drag the folder with all the photos of the listing into the page. WipePic reads subfolders too. You can add up to 300 files, up to 50 MB each.
- Check the groups of metadata that WipePic found. Click a photo to see each field and, if there is a GPS position, a dot on a small offline world map.
- Select Remove Metadata. WipePic works in your browser, so your photos are not uploaded.
- Download the cleaned photos. Several files come as one ZIP.
- Upload the cleaned photos to your listing.
WipePic does not re-encode the photos, so they look the same. It also keeps the orientation, the color profile and the HDR gain map. Read how to remove metadata from many photos if you have a large set.
Do not clean the photos for the Airbnb verification step. You take them in the Airbnb app, and the app needs the location data. Clean only the photos that you upload to the listing.
More tips for hosts
- Check the windows. A view of a street, a landmark or a neighbor’s house can show the exact place.
- Check the front door. House numbers, mailboxes and street signs are easy to read in photos of the entrance.
- Check reflections. Mirrors, glass doors and shiny appliances can show you, your phone or a number behind you.
- Remove private items. Mail, bills, family photos and school uniforms do not belong in the shot.
- Drone photos. Many drones save the exact GPS position and the altitude. Clean these photos too.
- Turn off the location tag. Read how to stop your camera from saving location so that new photos start clean.
WipePic cannot remove visible content, faces or pixel watermarks. It does not change your address or map pin on Airbnb.

Questions
Does Airbnb remove the EXIF data from listing photos?
We found no official statement. The Airbnb Help Center pages that we read about location verification do not say anything about EXIF data. Do not assume that the files are cleaned. Remove the metadata yourself before you upload.
Will cleaning my photos break the location verification?
It should not. Airbnb says that for the photo method, you take two new photos with the Airbnb app with precise location sharing on. Those photos are not your listing photos. Do not run the verification photos through a cleaner, and keep the originals of your listing photos in a private folder.
Does removing metadata hide my address?
No. The address and the map pin of your listing are settings in your Airbnb account. Removing the hidden data inside a photo does not change them. It only makes sure that the files do not carry an exact GPS position.
Can I clean the photos of several listings together?
Yes. Add up to 300 files, up to 50 MB each, or whole folders with subfolders. WipePic gives you the cleaned files as one ZIP if you clean several of them.
Does cleaning lower the quality of my photos?
No. WipePic does not re-encode photos when it cleans them, so the pixels do not change. It keeps the orientation, the color profile and the HDR data.
Remove the metadata from your photos
