Remove metadata from GIF files
Add your GIF files to the tool above and WipePic removes the comments, the XMP block, extra application data and anything after the end of the file. The frames, the timing, the transparency and the looping stay the same, and nothing is uploaded.

What metadata does a GIF file contain?
A GIF file carries much less metadata than a photo. It has no EXIF block and no GPS field, but it can still hold:
- Comment extensions: free text that a tool or a person wrote into the file.
- An XMP block, written by some editors and exporters, with author and software data.
- Application extensions from other programs. Only the animation loop block is needed by viewers.
- Extra data after the end of the file.
- An ICC colour profile, which describes how to show the colours.
What WipePic removes and keeps in GIF files
WipePic removes:
- Comment extensions
- The XMP block (author, rights, software and editing history)
- Application extensions other than the loop count and the colour profile
- Any data after the end of the file
WipePic keeps:
- Every frame and the colour tables, copied without decoding the image data.
- Frame timing and the transparent colour (Graphic Control blocks).
- The loop count of an animated GIF.
- The ICC colour profile, if the file has one.
Many GIF files have no removable metadata. When that is the case, WipePic says that the file is already clean and leaves it unchanged.
How to remove metadata from GIF files
- Add your GIF files (.gif) to the tool above. You can add up to 300 files at a time, and each file can be up to 50 MB.
- WipePic reads each file in your browser and shows what it found.
- Remove the metadata. The files stay in the GIF format unless you choose another format.
- Download the cleaned files. WipePic is free, and you do not need an account.
Cleaning does not remove a visible watermark or any other content that is part of the picture, and it cannot remove a record that is stored outside the file.
Questions
Do GIF files have EXIF data?
No. The GIF format has no EXIF block, so a GIF holds no GPS location from a camera. It can hold comments, an XMP block and application data, and WipePic removes those.
Does my animated GIF still play the same way?
Yes. WipePic keeps every frame, the delay between frames, the transparency and the loop count. It copies the image data without decoding it.
What if my GIF has no metadata?
Then WipePic reports that there is nothing to remove and returns the file unchanged. This is common for GIFs that were made by a simple tool.
Can WipePic remove a watermark from a GIF?
No. A watermark that is drawn into the frames is part of the picture, not metadata. WipePic only removes the hidden data around the frames.
