How to Remove EXIF Data on a Samsung Galaxy

Last updated · 5 min read

Quick answer

To stop new photos from saving the location, turn off Location tags in the Camera settings. To share a photo without its location, tick Remove location data in the Gallery share menu. To remove all metadata from a photo, use WipePic in your browser.

What a Samsung photo contains

Each photo from a Galaxy phone contains hidden data (metadata). It can include the GPS location, the date and time, and the phone model. If you take Motion Photos, the file also holds a short video clip. Anyone who gets the original file can read this data.

Menu names depend on your phone model and your One UI version. Samsung says that some settings are not available on every device. Look for the words in bold.

Method 1: Stop the Camera from saving the location

  1. Open the Camera app.
  2. Tap the Settings icon in the top left corner. You can also tap Quick controls (the four dots) under the viewfinder, then Settings.
  3. In the General part, turn off Location tags.

Samsung describes this setting as the one that attaches a GPS location tag to your pictures and videos. New photos then have no location. Older photos keep theirs.

Method 2: Remove the location when you share from Gallery

  1. Open Gallery. Press and hold a photo, then tap more photos to select them.
  2. Tap Share.
  3. Tick Remove location data.
  4. Choose the app or the contact.

Samsung's support page for this feature is for One UI 3.0 and later (last updated 2022-05-20). It says that the person who gets the photo cannot see the location when they swipe up on the image. The page talks only about the location. The date and the phone model may still be in the file, so check a shared copy in the EXIF viewer.

Method 3: Remove the location from a photo in Gallery

  1. Open the photo in Gallery.
  2. Tap More options (the three dots), then Details.
  3. Tap Edit.
  4. Tap the red minus sign next to the location.
  5. Tap Save.

Samsung's guide says to use this before you share media from Gallery. It describes the location only, so use Method 4 when you also want the camera details and the date gone.

Method 4: Remove all metadata with WipePic

  1. Open WipePic in Chrome.
  2. Tap Browse Files and select your photos. You can add up to 300 files, each up to 50 MB.
  3. Check what WipePic found. It groups the metadata by kind, and a click on a file shows each field and its value.
  4. Select Remove Metadata and download the clean photos. Several files download as one ZIP.

WipePic removes the location, the phone model and serial number, the date and time, the editing history, text notes, embedded thumbnails and other hidden data. It keeps the orientation and the colour profile. It does not re-encode the photo, so the pixels do not change. Your photos stay on your phone. They are not uploaded.

WipePic reads JPEG, PNG, WebP, HEIC, AVIF, GIF, TIFF and DNG files, so it also handles Galaxy photos in HEIF or RAW format.

Motion Photos

Samsung describes a Motion Photo as a short video clip that the camera records right before you press the Capture button. You turn it on or off with the Motion photo icon in the Camera. The clip is stored inside the photo file. WipePic removes it when it cleans a photo. See how to remove the video from a Motion Photo.

Check the result

  1. Open the clean photo in the WipePic EXIF viewer.
  2. Click the file row to see every field that is left. If the photo has GPS data, a dot shows on the small map.
  3. Compare it with the original to see what changed.

WipePic reads the cleaned file again and saves it only if no removable metadata is left. It does not remove what you can see in the picture, such as a face or a street sign. It does not edit or add metadata, and it does not handle video, PDF or Office files.

Questions

Does Samsung Gallery remove all EXIF data when I share?

The share option is called Remove location data, and Samsung describes it only as a way to remove the location. Check a shared copy in an EXIF viewer to see what else is still in the file.

Does turning off Location tags remove the location from old photos?

No. Samsung describes Location tags as the setting that attaches a GPS location tag to your pictures and videos. Turning it off affects new photos. Photos that you took earlier keep their location.

Why do I not see Location tags in my Camera settings?

Samsung says that camera settings can differ by model and software version. Look in the General part of the Camera settings, and check that the Camera app has permission to use your location.

Does WipePic work with Samsung Motion Photos?

Yes. A Motion Photo is a photo with a short video clip inside the file. WipePic removes the clip together with the other metadata, and it keeps the still photo as it is.
