Does WhatsApp Remove EXIF and GPS Data?

Last updated · 5 min read

Quick answer

Yes for a normal photo, no for a document. In tests from 2025 and 2026, a photo sent the normal way arrived without its GPS location, camera model and time taken. A photo sent as a document arrived as the original file with all its EXIF data. WhatsApp does not promise this, so clean the photo first if you will send it as a document.

What happens to a photo that you send on WhatsApp

WhatsApp has two main ways to send a photo, and they give different results.

How you send itWhat the recipient getsTest
Normal photo (gallery or camera)A smaller copy. GPS location, camera model and time taken are gone.ImgTweak, 2026-08-25; Soni, 2025
Document (paper clip, then Document)The original file. All EXIF data stays, including the GPS location.ImgTweak, 2026-08-25; Soni, 2025
HD qualityNot clear. Results were inconsistent.ImgTweak, 2026-08-25

The study by Nishchal Soni was published in June 2025 in Perspectives in Legal and Forensic Sciences. It tested photos from Android and iPhone devices. For documents sent through WhatsApp, the received files had the same MD5 and SHA-256 hashes as the originals, so every byte was the same. For normal photos, about one in six of the examined EXIF fields was left, mostly size data.

What WhatsApp removes from a normal photo

When you send a normal photo, WhatsApp makes a new, smaller copy. The new copy does not carry over the old EXIF block. In the ImgTweak test, the received photo had no GPS location, no camera model and no time stamp.

This is a side effect of the new copy, not a privacy feature. WhatsApp does not say that it removes metadata. Your original photo on your phone does not change.

The date is gone too. That is why saved WhatsApp photos often sort to the wrong day in a gallery. The file name, such as IMG-20230514-WA0007.jpg, usually still shows the day.

When WhatsApp keeps the EXIF data

A photo sent as a document is not recompressed. In December 2023, WhatsApp added an original-quality option for photos and video on iPhone, found under Document then Choose Photo or Video (MacRumors, 2023-12-04). The file size limit is 2 GB. WhatsApp's help page describes HD as a quality setting that gives clearer photos, and it does not mention metadata.

People use the document option because they want full quality. They often do not know that the location goes with it. Sellers, photographers and people who share holiday photos are the most likely to do this by accident.

Two more points:

  • The tests look at the received file. They do not show what WhatsApp itself reads or keeps.
  • Other data is not metadata. A street sign, a house number or a view from a window still shows where you were.

How to check what the recipient gets

  1. Pick a photo with a GPS location. Open it in the WipePic EXIF viewer to see what it holds.
  2. Send it to a friend or to yourself on another device, once as a normal photo and once as a document.
  3. Save both received files. Do not use the preview in the chat.
  4. Open each saved file in the EXIF viewer and look for GPS, camera model and date.

The viewer runs in your browser. Your photos are not uploaded. Repeat the test after big app updates, because the result applies to your version of the app only.

How to remove the metadata before you send

If you want to send a photo at full quality and without its location, clean it first.

  1. Open WipePic and add your photos.
  2. Select Remove Metadata. WipePic shows the metadata it found in each photo.
  3. Save the cleaned photos. Several photos come as one ZIP file.
  4. Send the cleaned photos as a document.

WipePic does not re-encode the photo, so the pixels do not change and the quality stays the same. It keeps the orientation and the color profile. For details, read how to remove the location from a photo.

Questions

Does WhatsApp remove the location from a photo?

When you send a photo the normal way, yes. In a test from August 2026 by ImgTweak and in a forensic study from 2025, the received copy had no GPS location. When you send the photo as a document, the location stays in the file. WhatsApp does not publish a guarantee for either case.

Does the HD setting keep the EXIF data?

We could not confirm it. WhatsApp describes HD only as a higher quality setting and does not mention metadata. ImgTweak found inconsistent results with HD in its 2026 test, so check the received file if it matters.

Can the recipient see where I took a photo that I sent as a document?

Yes, if the photo had a GPS location when you sent it. The document arrives as the original file. Anyone who saves it can open it in an EXIF viewer and read the coordinates.

Does WhatsApp remove the EXIF data from photos in a status update or a profile picture?

We found no test for these. The tests in this guide cover photos sent in a chat. Clean the photo first if you want to be sure.
