Our own test: 39 files on November 3, 2026

On November 3, 2026 we ran StripShot's cleaning code on 39 test files and checked each result. This is our own test, not an independent one. The files are our own test set, built to include hard cases such as damaged files and unusual containers. We ran the cleaning code, not StripShot's web page, so its interface might warn about some of these files. We counted leftover metadata with our own checker, so the numbers lean toward our definitions. We did not repeat the test after that date.

Result: 20 of the 39 files came back clean, with the image data verified identical to the input. Two more files, both damaged WebP files, came back clean and valid, but our checker could not compare their image data, so we do not count them. StripShot returned a file every time. Of the other 17:

  • In 5 cases the file still held identifying data. For example, a JPEG with data after the image end marker kept 89 tags, and a PNG with a .jpg name came back unchanged because the type is read from the file name.
  • In 7 cases the image displayed differently: the HDR gain map was lost on 4 Ultra HDR and Apple gain-map JPEGs, portrait orientation was lost on a PNG and a WebP, and an animated PNG became a still image.
  • The other 5 were one PNG with a harmless leftover (a DPI setting) and four damaged or mislabeled files that our checker could not read, so we count them as unconfirmed. On the 20 simple cases that both tools handled, the output was clean and intact: typical clean phone JPEGs were not a problem.

Where StripShot is better

  • It has features that WipePic does not: video cleaning, anti-fingerprint noise and fake EXIF data (Ghost Mode) on its paid plans.
  • In our test it returned a usable file for some slightly damaged files that WipePic refuses to save, for example a JPEG with no end marker or a PNG with a bad checksum.

Where WipePic is better

  • No daily quota in the free launch, and a batch of up to 300 photos.
  • More photo formats in one tool: HEIC, AVIF, GIF, TIFF and DNG as well as JPEG, PNG and WebP.
  • It checks every result before saving. If a file still holds removable metadata or the image data changed, WipePic saves nothing and shows the reason.

WipePic is not open source yet and has two technical limits: 300 files per batch and 50 MB per file. See the full list of alternatives.

Questions

Is StripShot free?

It has a free tier of 2 images a day. Pro costs $9 a month and Full Access $19 a month (checked November 6, 2026). WipePic is free during its launch with no daily quota.

Does StripShot upload my photos?

Its site says files never leave your device. In our check on November 3, 2026 we saw no request that carried a photo, only usage calls with an empty body. Its pages also load analytics scripts from Google, Meta and Reddit. WipePic does not upload your photos either.

Does StripShot clean HEIC photos?

Not in its photo tool, which covers JPEG, PNG and WebP. Its site sends HEIC, AVIF and PDF files to a separate tool. WipePic cleans HEIC directly.

Can I trust the 20 of 39 test result?

Treat it as one dated data point. We built the 39 files, we ran the cleaning code rather than the web page, and we judged leftovers with our own checker. It shows what can go wrong with hard files, not how StripShot does on ordinary photos.
